CHAPTER 5 – THE TRUCE
July 4, Jin’s birthday
In Shibuya, Zoe was looking for a gift for Jin. Her 4 friends have decided to go against her. Sam gave her the money to buy something for Jin and also for Aya Ueto. She has already bought something for Aya Ueto, a white-gold bracelet. Now she’s roaming the streets for Jin’s gift, she still hasn’t found a gift that suits him.
“Maybe I can give him a rope so can tie himself up… she mused while looking at a store. ”Bad Zoe., she scolded herself”
It’s already 8 pm and she hasn’t found a gift. She went in to a store that sells perfumes. There she found the new scent from Diesel. The bottle is covered with cloth. The scent was appealing and not so strong. She decided to buy it. She roamed around when something caught her attention, a necklace with a miniature soccer ball as pendant. It looks cute but a bit expensive she’ll be over the budget. Thinking hard if it’s worth paying for her money. He wouldn’t know that I’m the one who paid for it, then asked the saleslady for the necklace. With her presents in tow, she decided to go for a bite.
Humming to herself, she continued walking when she bumped into someone going out of store on her right.
“Zoe?!”
“oi, Yamashita-san. Konnichiwa!”
“Konnichiwa! Call me Pi or Yamapi please. Looks like we always bumping into each other”
“hai, ano, what are you doing in the streets what if somebody sees you?”
“It’s okay, this is my friends store. We’re celebrating Jin’s birthday here tonight”
“Ah sou desu ka. Why are you going out? The party hasn’t started yet?”
“Oh it’s starting already. I’m just waiting for George to come, he forgot his wallet and I’m waiting to pay for his taxi fare”
“I see”
“Please come in Jin will be happy to see you. He has asked me questions about you though I only know few things about you. I hope you won’t get mad at me.”
“It’s okay I’m not mad. It seems like your friend is here… I’ll go ahead” she bid him farewell as the man George get out of the cab.
“No, grab something to bite in the party we have lots of foods. Jin’s mom helped us with the food preparation. Then he dragged Zoe inside of Janji.
As they entered Yamapi shouted at the people inside,
“Guess who I bumped into outside?”
Yuu who was snatching some finger food in the table turn around
“A-re, it’s Zoe. Long time no see. You know Pi?... I see he posed for Cinema Square”
“You know her?:”
“Of course I also posed for Cinema Square you know, remember Heat island and June Bride. We’ve worked twice already.”
“sou ka? Jin wa?”
“Restroom”
“Zoe, give me your bag I’ll put it somewhere safe. Here’s the plate help yourself with our delicious food.”
“Thanks!”
Zoe got some food and sit beside Yuu. She always enjoyed talking with this half-Japanese he was always jovial and witty too. And of course they can freely communicate in English.
“Oh here’s Jin”
“Akanishi-kun, otanjoubi omedettou gozaimasu. I’m sorry I’m gate crashing.” She greeted the birthday boy politely.
Jin stood there staring at the girl, who has been occupying his mind for weeks now. He thought Pi was joking when he told him Zoe is here. Somehow Pi has urged him to confess what has been troubling him so he ended up confessing to his best friend like he did with Kame.
“uhm.. I’m glad to see you. Please enjoy the food.” He sat next to Zoe.
“Jin”, Yuu break the silence “I see you’ve met her also during cinema square shoot?”
“No, Pi introduced us when we bumped into her group in Club B. Then we work in Cinema”
“ sou ka. So I leave you two to chat. Yamapi is calling me” Yuu took his leave, sensing the building tension.
“The food is delicious ne. I heard this is your mom’s cooking.” Zoe tried to ease the tension.
“hai. She cooks good food. Yamapi is addicted to my mom’s cooking”
“Really? These food is really addictive specially for someone like me whose everyday meals are from restaurants”
“You don’t cook?”
“I cook when I have time. But during weekdays, I depend on fast foods and restaurants because of my schedule”
“I love my mother’s cooking. When I studied in LA for 6 months I really missed her home-cooked meals”
“It’s hard ne. Being away from your family and friends. You may have new friends but no one can replace the people you left at home”
“I agree. But it’s also fun making new acquaintances” Jin enjoyed talking to her. He doesn’t want to spoil the unspoken truce between them. “You’re also living away from your family right? I mean you’re working in a foreign land”
“Yes, I miss my family, my father actually my mom died already. I also miss my friends and cousins. But I have my best friend with me so life is not that hard. It’s our dream to work and live here in Japan. We try to go to visit our family once a year during Christmas and New Year.”
“In your work you also meet different personalities”
“I do. Sometimes I end up being friends with my subjects. Like with Yamapi and Yuu. They’re fun to work with”
“How about me, can’t we be friends? You see, we can talk without throwing insulting words at each other. Maybe we can start getting to know each other more by becoming friends.”
“It’s because we have a different start. You know what I mean. But if you want to be my friend it’s okay with me. I’m also glad we can talk this way. I’m not happy having arguments with you. Frankly, maybe you know it already that I’m a fan. I really love KAT-TUN. If I can be your friend I’ll be happy. Just one thing, can we put our past relation aside?”
“Well, we can’t continue ignoring that fact. But if that’s what you want, I’ll try my best. It’s a truce then?” he raised his pinky like making a promise.
Zoe linked her pinky. Praying this is the right decision.
“Please stay a bit I’ll get you home later”
They stood up to mingle with the other people in the room who are getting curious on what they’re talking about. Jin introduced him to the other people in the room.
“If only it will always be like this” Zoe thought.
“So, you’ve made up?” Pi whispered to Jin
“Sort of” Jin whispered back
“Well it’s a good start. Ganbatte! If you really want her go for her”
After the party, Jin drove Zoe home.
“Gomen, I didn’t get you any gift.”
“It’s fine. Your presence is much more important. And of course your promise to be friends with me is the best gift from you”
Zoe blushed.
“What’s those?” gazing at the paper bags on the backseat. “You’ve gone shopping?
Zoe was lost for words.
“Yeah, I did,” she thought to herself “actually I bought them for you”
They reach her apartment. And Jin walked her to her door.
“You want to come inside” she shyly invited the Jin.
“If you don’t mind, after you” Jin accepted the invitation.
“Have a seat. Make yourself comfy. I’ll just brew coffee.”
Jin can’t help but feel a little awkward especially where he was seating. He can still remember the night they shared together. In the kitchen, Zoe was also calming herself. Jin is seating in the living room where they had sex. “It’s his birthday, I won’t spoil the night and break our truce,” She also decided to give the gift she bought for him, the necklace.
“Here have some coffee”
“Thanks. I remember we will have premier showing of Speed Racer, are you coming? I mean you’re involved with the premier right?”
“Yes, some of us were going to the premier but I’m not sure if I can make it tomorrow. I’ve got some photos to edit.”
“Too bad. I wish you would be there.”
Zoe sat opposite Jin. She reached for the one of the paper bags beside her chair and gave it to Jin.
“For you. Happy birthday!”
“hontou?! You bought me a present? Liar.” he immediately put his hands inside the bag and pulled out the box inside.
“Yes. I was supposed to ask Sam to give it to you tomorrow. I just spied it in one of the stores I visited this afternoon. I was actually asked to buy gifts for you and Ueto-san, a gift from Cinema Square”
“So this is from Cinema Square? You should have given it to me tomorrow, so you can come to the premier”
“No it’s from me. Cinema’s gift is still here.”
“What can Cinema give to me… can I peek?”
“No. It’s enough that you know. But please can you act surprise when you received it. My superiors will kill me if they learn I told you.”
“Okay, promise I won’t tell them. Can I open my gift now?”
“douzo, I hope you’ll like it. When I saw it in the display counter I remembered you”
Jin opened his unexpected gift.
“WOW! A necklace. A soccer ball… arigatou. I like it” Jin stood and gave her a peck in the cheek.
“You’re welcome”
Jin stayed for two hours. They just talk about random things about themselves. No one dared to mention that faithful night they spend in each other’s arm. Maybe they’re trying to avoid the subject but it’s fine as long as it would mean the beginning of a new friendship. The wall between them is starting to collapse. They now shared a new camaraderie like normal friends do.
“Jaa, I’ll see you again. Let’s eat out when we have our free time ne. But if you can come tomorrow please come and see the premiere” he kissed her again this time on her forehead. “oyasumi”
“Take care. I’ll try to finish early. Yeah let’s eat some time. Well, maybe we can bump each other in the club again” Zoe answered. “Oyasumi”
The next day….
“Ladies and gentlemen, the voice actors for Speed racer, Akanishi Jin and Ueta Aya.” They went on stage amidst the loud applause and cheers from the audience. They both spoke and express their appreciation to the people who took the time to attend the premier. They heard that the tickets are sold after the few minutes the booth opened. Ueto Aya spoke about how it is to do the voice action for the female leading role. And again mentioned how Jin has a sexy voice. Then she mentioned it’s Jin’s birthday the day before as if a queue, the staffs went up the stage bringing a cake with a Speed’s car as its decoration. Jin was so surprised with the whole preparation then he heard Aya-san started to sing happy Birthday and the fans followed suit. He then blew his candles and made his speech. “This feel awkward”
“I’ve never celebrated my birthday this way in front of many people. Thank you for the greetings and the beautiful cake”
Then he proceeds talking about his role and his enthusiasm regarding the movie. Aya-san gave him a gift. Then he remembered the gift he received last night. He was actually wearing it under his black suit. He wonders if Zoe came but he can’t see her in the crowd.
After the premier they shook hands with the audience. On their way back to their resting room they were surprised to see a group of people waiting for them. The person he was looking for was there with her best friend and her gay friends. They gave him and Aya a bouquet each. And a present handed by Zoe.
“Arigatou” he said. He was surprised not of the gift but the one who handed the gift.
“Congratulation on your premier” Sam greeted the couple that just walked in.
After a few exchange of words, they went on separate ways. Jin needs to go back the JE building so he head out first. He didn’t get the opportunity to say goodbye to Zoe so he dialed her number.
“Moshi-moshi, Jin-Kun?”
“Yes, it’s me. Thanks for coming to the premier. You see I was surprised when I receive the present not because I receive it but because you handed it”
“Sam and Shou dragged me there. Because I’m a Jin fan so I shouldn’t miss this opportunity they told me.”
“You looked pretty in you’re black dress”
“You too you looked dashing in your black suit. A-re, let’s stop praising each other okay. Go back to work already”
“Okay bye. I hope to see you soon.”
“Me too”
Zoe knew in herself that she’s falling in love. She’s been happy with the few times they’ve spoken with each other. Even when she recalled the war they have before made her happy. But despite the happiness she felt she couldn’t help but to feel some uneasiness like some fear lurking around her heart. It’s the fear of getting too much in love with Jin. With Jin, future relationship is impossible. His status is one problem and Jin’s reputation as a playboy. Not long ago he was issued to be back in his ex-girlfriend’s arm. And of course, he’s agency is one of the biggest obstacles. The other biggest problem is Jin is not in love with her. “I’m crazy” she thought. “Falling in love expecting to be loved back when everything is impossible to begin with”
After the premier they haven’t seen each other for nearly a month. KAT-TUN is still in the middle of their summer concerts. The consolation of not seeing the man of her dream is he always calls her almost every night after their concert ends. “I miss him terribly and I feel like a fool always clutching my hand phone waiting for his call” she confided to Sam one day. “Am I going crazy? Why does he keep calling me? Damn, he’s making it hard for me.”
“It’s okay. Maybe he likes you too. What do you talk about?”
“Oh stuffs about him and myself. What we did the whole day. Asking each other what we eat for dinner and stuff like that”
“That’s what you call phase one: getting to know each other. You said it yourself that you meet the wrong way. Just take things slow. I know you’re deeply madly in love with him. I just hope he won’t make you cry.”
Exactly one month after they saw each other, Zoe went to Club B with her friends. This is the first time after meeting Jin that she went to the said club. She decided to have fun and forget about Jin, he hasn’t called for 4 days and didn’t answer her mails. She knew that KAT-TUN has just finished their Tokyo Dome concerts; unfortunately she wasn’t able to go and watch because of workloads. She has to help her best friend with the editing because Shou-chan was on leave he has gone to his hometown to visit his mother. She worked until midnight side by side with Samantha and Mika. They finish all the work this after they decided to take a breather. This time it’s just the 3 girls who went to gimmick. They’ll be meeting Mika’s boyfriend who came back to Japan for a visit.
“Yuta will be bringing his friend so there will be 5 of us. So you two entertain Rob okay he’s a Hawaian”
“Hai” Sam answered eagerly. Zoe just smiled. She’s not in the mood to entertain someone tonight. She just wants to dance until her feet grow tired and drink so went she go home she’ll just sleep. She doesn’t want to have free time to think about Jin.
Yuta and Rob have arrived. Well she like Rob and Sam seems to be engrossed with Rob. She enjoyed talking with the guy. Then the 3 of left Mika and Yu-chan who are busy cuddling with each other, they joined the people in the dance floor. They are busy chatting and dancing that they didn’t notice the pair of eyes watching them.
“Jin! Hey!” Kame called his friend who was spacing out.
“hai?!” Jin answered absent-mindedly.
“You’re the one who invited me here and now you’re out of this world? Who are you looking out there anyway?”
“Can you see the girl wearing a white tank-top with a black vest, she’s dancing with a guy in black shirt and another girl wearing a dress?”
“Yeah, I can see their group so what’s wrong with them they seem to be enjoying themselves?”
“It’s Zoe the one with the vest.”
“So what, you haven’t spoken with her for several days already right? You said you want to sort your feeling out”
Jin was seriously jealous of the guy dancing with Zoe. True, he didn’t call her or answered her mails, it’s because he’s getting confused about how he felt for the girl.
Kame break his silent reverie “Man, you’re in love. You’re jealous right? You’re pissed off that she’s dancing with another guy”
“Yes, I’m totally pissed off.”
“Why not go and joined them. Since I’m really not in the mood to party and I want to catch some sleep. Just be true to yourself”
“Guess who’s talking. Okay I’ll let you go. But please be true to yourself too. It’s been ages since you broke up with Kyon.”
“I’ve moved on man. I go on dates too. I’m just not ready to go on steady with anyone. I enjoy being single right now”
“Yeah right. So the college girl is just a date not a girlfriend.”
“Sort of. No commitments for now”
“Okay fine. I’m just here if you need someone. Like you’re always here when I’m on the rocks.”
“I will. Introduce me to her next time” with that Kame left him sitting in the bar.
