Underneath Hatred
Summary: Akanishi Jin is arguably the most desirable guy in Japan today. All the girls drool at mere sight of him; all the boys want to be him. Nobody could reject his charm. Nobody. Except Anna, the number one photographer of Wink Up magazine. She hated Akanishi Jin. Or so it seems.

“Ueda-san, I know you can do it. Come on, look at me and flash that cute smile of yours!”
Intending to obey the order given, Ueda lifted the corners of his lips, only ended in looking like he was having a severe toothache.
The person who held the big camera laughed. “Come on, you can do better than that!”
“Yeah, Tat-chan, smile! It’ll sell this magazine!” Kame urged.
Anna sighed, thinking hard. Though years have passed, it sure does need more effort to make Ueda Tatsuya’s expression to follow the theme. Ueda-san actually has a gorgeous face, with good lines that would look good from any camera angle, one face that would make any cameramen—or camerawomen—itch to snap their camera for. Since she was still an assistant, Ueda was always hard to make smiling faces. Now that she is the Wink Up in charge photographer, she still can’t make Ueda-san smile easily, though it’s threatening a main coverage of Wink Up not to be printed.
Anna put her camera down on a nearby chair and approached Ueda-san who was standing awkwardly in the middle of the white decorated room. Maybe I must put more effort. So Anna made funny faces, putting her hands on top of her head to imitate a rabbit, and Ueda’s mouth twitched. Junno came beside Anna and made rabbit faces too, hopping around. 1, 2, 3…and Ueda laughed, saying, “You and your stupid face, Junno! Get out of here!” But Junno kept going on, “Nani? Where’s my carrot?” and Ueda laughed again. Anna ran for her camera and took shots after shots, saying, “Look at me, yes, good. One more, brilliant! That sure is a wide smile. Turn left and glance to me, good! Oh that’s SO sweet! Okay, done! I have it. Thank you Ueda-san”.
“Thank you, Anna-san. Sorry for being such a trouble” Ueda said, stepping out from the set.
“Nope. You’ve always been a challenge!” Anna grinned.
“Okay, next, Kamenashi!”
If anybody swore that being a photographer is the best job in the world, they may be true. Considering that I could stand this close with the biggest selling boy band. I met all the good-looking guys in the business. And the girls, some acting like divas, some so down to earth and unidentifiable if not in make up, but changed to butterflies under my lens. This time theme is “Sincerity”. KAT-TUN must make an angelic smile and look like they are good enough to touch. The article that will accompany the pictures described how they really like their job and feels that their fans attention is like a big reward. That will make fans go “Awww…kawaii…” and run to the disc store to buy KAT-TUN’s new ballad single.
“No, no, Kamenashi-san, biting lips does not refer to sincere, it refers to sexy! Now give me your best smile!”
Kamenashi obeyed.
“Good. Now look down…yes. Turn around and glance back…great! Sit on the bench, put your leg on the…right” Anna flashed her camera averagely five times in one second, all resulted with good shots.
Next is Koki’s turn. The rapper is rather shy today, but finally finished his pictures, smiling widely until his eyes almost closed.
Maru and Junno finished first and now they were playing cards together in one of the couches.
“Did you peek on my cards?” Junno asked, finger straightly pointing to Maru’s face.
“I didn’t! You just lose!” Maru denied.
“You did! You intentionally pointed the ceiling to peek on my cards! Cheater! Anna-san, ask Maru not to cheat when he is playing cards!”
Anna came and stood beside the couch, and said sternly, “Nakamaru-san, don’t cheat when you’re playing cards”
“I didn’t!” Maru yelled.
“You totally did!”
While they were arguing, Ueda was sitting on the couch in front of them, watching the scene while eating potato chips from a big sack.
“You’re sooo annoying Junno!” Maru said.
Ueda offered Anna the snack. Anna shrugged and took a handful, sitting beside him. “Your favorite reality show?” she asked to Ueda.
“Yeah” Ueda answered, munching and making cracking noises.
“Akanishi’s make-up is finished” the hairdresser announced.
Anna stood up and took position in front of the set again. No jokes, no cordial chat, not even polite greetings were changed between them. There has always been mutual dislike between Anna, Wink Up main photographer, and Akanishi Jin, arguably one the most desirable guy in Japan. Nobody knew why Anna, the easy going and friendly girl, always regarded Akanishi Jin with coldness. Nobody could explain why Jin who usually is a relax person; always go to Wink Up photoshoot with no enthusiasm at all. KT-TUN guessed that sometime ago, God knows in which edition, Jin had offended the photographer, whether by being difficult, arrogant, or disrespectful, and Anna hasn’t forgot it since. But then again, it’s just a guess, and it will be more truthful if they say, “No idea”.
Jin walked to the set in silence, lips pursed tight, looking like he would be anywhere but here. He then stood in the center of the set, saying, “Make it quick”
The laughing and teasing in the room stopped, everybody felt there is a tension between the two, and KT-TUN looked at them, curious and disturbed.
Anna adjusted her camera’s zoom, “No intention to make this longer than needed. You know the theme. Show me a sincere look”
Jin posed and Anna snapped.
“Take your hands off from your pockets” Anna ordered.
Jin took his hands off his pockets.
Anna stop taking pictures, “Akanishi-san, you’re supposed to look soft. Don’t smile while your eyes look murderous!”
“Then shouldn’t you do your job and direct me?” Jin asked coldly.
“Do you need a minute to arrange your mood?”
“There is no need to insult me” Jin said, folding his hands together, looking somewhat gorgeously intimidating in Levi’s brand new series of jeans and jacket.
Anna held herself checked from making a stinging remark back and reminded herself, “I’m a professional……”
“Okay, close your eyes and think of your favorite person. Imagine him or her doing something funny” Anna directed.
Biting his inner mouth, Jin closed his eyes. When he opened his eyes, he smiled wide, managing to look innocent and adorable in one pose and Anna snapped her camera.
“We’re done” she announced.
With that cue, Jin left the stage, entered the curtained corner, came out wearing his own clothes again, put the Levi’s on a table, grabbed his bag, and walked to the door.
“I’m going now” Jin said.
“Chotto! You don’t want to go to Roppongi with us?” asked Kame.
“I got an appointment with Pi and Yuu. Gomen, see you guys tomorrow!” he said, behind his sunglasses. And walked out of the studio.
The room was silent for a moment. “Ano, minna-san, kyou wa arigato gozaimasu!”
“Hai, doita shimashite! See you again Anna-san! I had a great time. It’s always fun with you” Maru said.
Anna smiled back to them and walked them to the lobby afterwards.
“Hah…. it really does feel good to drink after work!” Anna exclaimed, looking happily to her glass with the festive blue liquid in it. “And how is it going on with you, Shinji? Still trying to be a star?” Anna asked to the bartender, which was her friend.
“Yeah. I’ve got the looks, but not the luck. I’m still going to auditions and taking acting course, I hope someday I’ll make it big like all the celebrities that come here every night”
“You know, they don’t have a fairy tale life…”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean yeah true, they are rich enough to have a penthouse and Jaguars, but actually they have no time to enjoy it enough. Always busy with jobs, sleep deprived all the time, and they can’t date in public. Though sometimes there are celebrities who threw everything to the wind and do as they damn well please, regardless of what their agency told them”
“I just want the money and the fame” Shinji grinned. “You just photographed somebody today and in the mood to tell about their rotten sides?”
Anna drank her glass empty and stretched it to Shinji again, “Oh no. No, no, no. It’s KAT-TUN today. They’re not like some of those narcissistic divas who refused plain water and the fast food lunch we prepared. They’re nice. Well…almost all of them are nice”
“So there is one pompous man among them? Who—well, well, talking about it, there’s one of them coming here tonight” Shinji informed, looking to the direction of the club’s entrance.
Anna was surprised and turned to the same direction. God, what did I do to deserve this? Akanishi Jin was walking down the circling stairs after Shirota Yuu and Yamashita Tomohisa, while Anna turned back to the bar before anyone could recognize her—just not in the mood for small chat with perfect lined faces guys after work—and stand up, planning to disappear in the dancing crowd, but it’s pointless. Yamapi shouted, “Anna! Anna-san! Guys, it’s Anna from Wink Up!”
Anna turned around and smiled tiredly, “Hi, Yamashita-san! Shirota-san!”
Shirota waved, smiling. Jin arrived later and recognized Anna, managing to nod and mumbled “Hi”.
Now why did he has to look like I did something wrong?
“Hi” Anna said back. Those guys came to the bar and Yamapi sat beside Anna, Yuu beside Yamapi, thus, because there is only one chair left, Jin sat beside Anna, ordering three expensive beers for them. Shinji poured the drinks and moved to the end of the bar, making drinks as requested.
“It’s been awhile ne?” asked Yuu.
“Yes, it’s been several months since I took your picture” Anna said, inwardly cursing her brain for thinking that Shirota Yuu just turned his head at the right angle for a brilliant shot.
Yamapi nodded, “Hai hai I watched that edition. It was good, but it’s not because you’re cool, it’s because the photographer is her”
“Hee? You mean I look bad if it wasn’t for her?”
“Of course!” Yamapi nodded, turning to Yuu and laughing. And Anna hated herself for seeing Yamapi’s movement stopped every quarter of a second and forming to pictures in her head. God, I’m obsessed with my job.
“NEWS will be next week, ne? I’ll look forward to see everybody again” Anna said.
“Yeah. What’s the theme? I forgot”
“Summer fun. We’ll take pictures in a park where there is a big fountain, and you all will have to get inside the fountain pool!”
“Ah. Wet shirts and all that?” Yuu asked.
“That’s what will sell!” Anna admitted, smilingly.
Jin, who sat silently all of the time, suddenly raised his voice, “Would KAT-TUN have summer theme too?”
Anna was forced to look at him, “You will, three weeks again”
“Ah!” Yuu said, “I like this song! Let’s dance!”
“Cool! It’s number three in Oricon now!” Yamapi said, “Come on, Anna, dance with us!”
“Um, no, thanks, I just come to drink tonight so you guys just dance. I’m fine here”
“It’s rude to refuse, you know” Jin said carelessly, walking first to the dance floor.
Yamapi held Anna’s hand and pulled her up, “It won’t hurt to have some fun! Ikuzo!”. And he led them to the dance floor where Jin was dancing alone to the music, not caring that all the girls stared at him with hungry eyes and the guys scowled with a “Get out of here!” expression. If Johnny Kitagawa watched Jin dancing like this, he would order it to be recorded and sold it as a DVD. Yuu came and managed to keep up with Jin’s rhythm, while Yamapi and Anna dance and talk in the same time.
“I watched Kurosagi the Movie” Anna informed.
“You did?” Yamapi asked back, “Do you like it?”
“Yeah. I’m glad Kurosagi finally had his revenge”
“You look good with Horikita Maki. Very cute” Jin said.
“Arigato. She is indeed a nice actress to work with” Yamapi said.
“It must feel great to play with all those senior actors ne?” Anna asked.
“Yeah. But I was nervous, actually”
“It didn’t show at all at the movie” Yuu commented.
“Even Matsuyama Kenichi watched it and said it was good” Anna informed.
“Uso! You meet Matsuyama Kenichi? I’m a big fan of that guy! How is he like?”
“I met him once” Jin cut in, “He behaves so ordinary. Very easy to talk to”
Like Jin never said anything, Anna said, “Very down to earth person. And very polite”
“I would want to play with him one day” Yamapi said, dancing with his hands up, “that would be so cool!”
“Any new acting project?” Yuu asked Yamapi.
“I have a new dorama soon, it will start shooting the end of this month. I play a junior doctor. With Aragaki Yui and Toda Erika”
“You? A doctor? It’s unimaginable!” Jin commented. “It’s hard to imagine Yamapi as a doctor, ne?” Jin turned, talking to Anna.
“How is the story?” Anna asked to Yamapi.
“It’s a team of doctors who—“
But Yamapi stopped in midway because Jin stopped dancing and grabbed Anna’s hand, pulling her hard out of the dancing floor. Yamapi could only stare at them with wide opened mouth. Yuu frowned at Jin dragging Anna away, “What’s going on between them?”
“Nothing. As least that’s what I know of” Yamapi said.
Jin dragged Anna to the corridor outside, leading to the restrooms. The second they arrived there, Anna—who as much as she wanted to can’t fight Jin’s strength—pulled her hands off Jin’s grip and screamed angrily, “NAN DE?”
Jin turned to face her and screamed as hard as he could, “It’s YOU!”
“What’s with me? Who gave you the right to drag me out like that, huh?” Anna asked, rubbing her reddening wrist.
“Stop ignoring me! I’ve had enough of it!” Jin yelled, frustration could be heard in his angry voice.
Shocked, Anna frowned. “I didn’t—“
“Oh yes, you did!” Jin put his hands on Anna’s shoulders, shaking her. “Don’t try to deny it! You hate me without any reason! And that, is killing me!”
Jin brushed his hair. “Nobody ignores me! But you do! I hate how you look disgusted when you see me!”
“What do you want? Can’t you just leave me alone?” Anna asked, screaming at the top of her voice.
“Tell me why! Why are you acting like I’m worthless? What did I do?”
“You just can’t accept it right? All of those girls, they always throw themselves at you and now you hate me because I don’t do the same!”
“I don’t hate you, Anna! Goddamnit! It’s you who hate me! Now, why? TELL ME!”
“BECAUSE I LIKE YOU TOO MUCH I’M AFRAID I CAN’T CONTINUE LIVING!!!”.
Jin blinked. For one second, he stared to Anna’s eyes, the photographer who always treated him like he doesn’t deserve to appear in her magazine, searching for affirmation, anything, that could make her last screaming statement make sense. And he found the affirmation in her eyes, though she was still looking at him full of hatred, not of love. But maybe hatred and love are not different.
Jin caught Anna’s arm and pushed her to the wall.
“Let go off me!”
“If I say I like you, will you believe me?” Jin asked, barring her to move away with his hands.
For a reason unknown, Anna’s anger changed to sadness. She felt her heart is stabbed painfully with Jin being so close to her, “I don’t know!” she said, turning her head to the side so she doesn’t have to look at Jin’s eyes.
“I do. I do like you. It’s you’re way of ignoring me that made me curious about you. If you didn’t hate to look at me that much, you will know that I stare at you all the time when KAT-TUN had photoshoots” Jin said, looking down to Anna, who still refused to look at him.
“How about trying to be my girlfriend?”
“No!”
“Other girls would jump at the chance”
“You don’t like me!” Anna denied, “You just want to believe that because you want to stop me not caring about you! You just can’t stand it and you use every way you can to change me. And besides this is not good. This will never work out!” Anna pushed Jin and he let her do that. Making a safe distance from Jin, Anna continued with, “You! And all those JE rules! You can’t date with me! It will be bad for you, and for me too, and I don’t want the trouble, okay! Besides, with all of those restrictions, you still have enough girls waiting in line for you, like what the tabloid said about you and—“
“You read about me then?”
“And that playboy image is sickening!”
“Anna, you’re crying”
Putting her hand on her cheek, Anna found that it was wet with her own tears. With a shaky voice, she pleaded, “Let’s just forget this. Let’s forget we ever talked about this. When we meet again, you will behave normally, like this never happened. Thank you, good night” Anna said, then turned for the exit door.
“Whoa, wait, not so fast” Jin said, easily keeping with her walking pace and took hold of her hand again and pulled her out of the club. Despite Anna’s protests, Jin made her sit in his car and drove away.
“Why are you bringing me here? I want to go home” Anna said, turning for the door.
“That’s not gonna happen” Jin said.
“What is going on?” a woman came, and spoke directly to Jin. An unbelievably beautiful woman with smooth satin skin and thick black hair who smells like flower. Anna forgot everything and desperately fished in her bag for her digital camera.
“This girl here, Okaa-chan, refuses to believe that I like her and went angry” Jin said, pointing to Anna’s face.
The woman looked from Jin to Anna, then said to Anna, “Believe him”.
And to Jin she said, “Talk it thoroughly with her, I’ll make tea” and floated away.
Anna looked until she disappeared. Before she had time to complimented Jin on her mother’s beauty, he climbed up the stairs, speaking in midway, “What are you doing? Follow me!”
“No, I’ll stay here”
“You like being dragged around, don’t you?”
“I don’t”
“Then come here!” Jin said from the top of the stairs.
Anna finally followed. When she arrived upstairs, Jin was poking his head from a room, “Come in” he said.
“Bye” Anna turned around. For the third time that night, Jin pulled her hand, make her enter his bedroom, and shut the door. Anna stood there, looking around the white room that somehow looked like the set of today’s photo shoot. And shocked to see the big human size poster of the back of a naked, ridiculously sexy girl plastered on Jin’s wall.
“What a pervert man!” Anna commented.
“It just gave the room a nice atmosphere”
“Whatever. And why am I here?”
“I’m kidnapping you until you say yes”
“Yes what?”
Jin smirked, “Until you say, ‘Yes, Jin, I want to be your girlfriend’, you will not leave my room”
Anna rolled her eyes, “Nonsense. Let me out”
Jin locked the door, and put the key inside his jeans pocket.
“You’re going nowhere, Anna. You can be ignorant outside there, but not here when we’re alone in this locked room. Nowhere to run from me” Jin said, walking forward to her. Anna panicked and stepped back, “Jin, this will bring no good to anyone of us. You might regret this tomorrow”
“No, I won’t” Jin said, “You won’t either”
To put some space, Anna walked to the couch and sat there. Jin followed and sat beside her.
“Now, let’s talk like adults” Jin said, making himself comfortable and leaned on the couch. “You like me and I like you. What’s stopping us from being together?”
“Your idol status” Anna said flatly, not betraying her nervousness in her tone.
“Ah. Then let’s pretend I’m nobody when we’re together”
“That’s impossible”
“That’s the best way” Jin said, happily taking Anna’s left hand, and analyze it, comparing it with his own palm. “Very small hand” he concluded.
They stare at each other.
Jin pulled Anna in a hug. Anna almost screamed “Let me go!” but she couldn’t found any voice in her throat. Jin nuzzled on her neck, saying, “Feel me, Anna. Can you still make yourself believe that I’m lying?”.
Several seconds passed until Anna gave up and forget all the insecurities she felt, putting her arms up, and hugged Jin back. He smiled. “I’m warning you, I don’t hug girls, except my girlfriend. So this means you’re officially dating me”
When Anna didn’t voice any objection, Jin said like a child, “Yaaaaay! We’re dating! We’re dating! Hehe”
“You’re noisy!” Anna protested.
“I have a good way of being silent. This” Jin said, and without warning, placed his lips on Anna’s and kissed her without a sound. “There. Any comment?”
No comment said. No more protest spoken.
